New version of Dwarf Fortress released! If you think Fortress Mode is too hard, then play it for the new changes to Adventure Mode!

I thought was finally getting the hang of the military so I thought "Hey, let's give these recruits some real practice."

4 dwarves with steel armor and weapons and one archer in leather, vs one chained up goblin thief. Outcome. 5 dead dwarves and 4 dead war dogs and a barely scratched goblin. T_T

I'm just going back to cage and pit traps. Dx
Razenth2010-11-14 22:01:51
Make sure you disarm gobbos you use for target practice. ESPECAILLY thieves. The average gobbo ambusher has like, 4 in their weapon skill. Thieves have like 8+.

Once you do that though, gobbos make great weapon practice. If you give all your soldiers training weapons, they can literally beat on them for seasons and the things won't die, giving your soldiers oodles of weapon experience.

How does one disarm a goblin? ):
Unknown2010-11-14 23:07:30
If memory serves me, it goes kinda like this:

( d )( b ) ( c ) put cursor over cage (enter)(enter) to reclaim everything within the cage
( d )( b ) ( d ) put cursor over cage (enter)(enter) to mark everything within the cage for dumping
( k ) put cursor over cage ( d ) to unmark the actual cage for dumping

Your haulers will then proceed to strip the goblin naked and dump everything on your nearest refuse pile or something like that.
Razenth2010-11-15 00:39:44
Though, if you're using them for target practice, it's better NOT to strip off their armor. If you want to be selective, you need to do this:

Make you have a bookkeeper and make sure he's gotten high precision on your goods. This lets you see your specific stocks on the stocks screen (z. the move right a few)

Find the specific weapon the gobbo is carrying. The default listing aggregates by type. If you press TAB, it'll split up into individual weapons. To figure out which one the gobbo is carrying, you pick a weapon and then zoom to it. If it zooms over the gobbo cage, it's probably their weapon. Claim (f) and dump it (d) from the stocks menu. You need refuse hauling and a garbage zone.

The outpost liaison Dumed Kubukgeb from Misasmel has arrived.
A caravan from Misasmel has arrived.
An ambush! Curse them!
An ambush! Curse them!
Digging designation cancelled: damp stone located. (aquafier)
Snatcher! Protect the children!

That all happened at pretty much the exact same time. Unpause for one, straight to the next. Dx

Two ambush parties right on top of the caravan. One of the caravan guards died in the mess but then the other preceded to single handedly beat the censor.gif out of like 8 goblins until they all ran. The ones that could still run, anyway.

I finally got some working irrigation done. (baby steps, baby steps)

Ah, the wonders of irrigation.

I got fed up with some of the complicated methods I devised not working, so I used dwarf + bucket.
Llesvelt2010-11-15 08:53:12
Bah, Luddite.

I finally get up to creating a game. Woot, though I used pre-packaged dwarves, skills, and items.
After like half an hour I decide on a location. Alright, I'm getting there.
Still don't know how to really play, so I follow a tutorial. Need to start somewhere.
Doing great so far, now I just need a farm. I need water for a farm? Well I'll just tap into this water source I see over here---OMGMYFORTRESS IS BEING FLOODED.
And it's leaking to the outside. They may die, but one last thing to try. Move them to the right of the map, where there's a clear area.

Far better (and cheesier) than using trapped goblins for practice is to use the Danger Room technique.

Basically, fill your practice room (make it small for ease-of-filling) with wooden training spears in spike traps. Link the spike traps up to a lever, and have someone pull the lever repeatedly. Wooden training spears won't do much, if any damage to your dwarves, and it increases their skills very very quickly (they're basically taking up to 10 attacks every few seconds, depending upon the number of spikes in each trap).

In the early stages, most of them just hit their armour - increasing their armour ability! But they dodge them or block them (with a shield if they have one, with a weapon at a slightly lower rate if not, I think) or parry them with their weapon or something, getting a little bit of experience to those, and increasing that proc rate. Mine tend to hit Legendary Fighter and Legendary Shield User before Legendary Armour User or Legendary Weaponry, at which point (for training purposes) I strip them of their shields to encourage training in not-legendary things.

Of course, if a pet or infant wanders into the Danger Room, expect them to have to be carried out. Probably straight to a sarcophagus.

That is amazing.

Also oh :censor: wiki. Why did I not find that sooner.

Because you completely ignored my earlier post on Page 1.

Also, read the Saga of Boatmurdered. It's based on a Succession Game from an old version of the game, but it still gives a good idea of what should be done to establish a happy, healthy fortress.

You even posted right under it.
Esano2010-11-18 01:58:47
Oh God you were trying to play without the wiki? Ouch.
Lehki2010-11-18 03:28:55
It's fun figuring things out on your own. But yeah I got quite a few dwarves killed and fortresses abandoned before even hitting like, a pop of 50. Mostly from too much fooling around with pumps, or trying to hunt rather mean things and leading them back inside the fortress. dry.gif
Esano2010-11-18 10:02:05
So, how many people would be interested in a Lusternian DF succession game, a la Boatmurdered? I'd like people who are willing to actually play the fortress for a year. You don't need to be good at it (although I suggest playing around with other fortresses, so you at least have the hang of the game) - in fact, not being good makes for funnier entries.

If you can/will, post in response.
