That is an interesting aside, actually, especially considering we've seen something similar on these forums (DOTA mafia with people exploding when they mention techies comes to mind instantly).

Would you suggest not talking so much in flavour terms as in standard mafia terms, so as to avoid anything else like this?

I think more so about Casilu's last game where a player could kill anyone who said their role name

I'd actually rather people talk in flavor, since I don't know a whole lot about mafia, but I know everything about HP. unsure.gif
Ssaliss2010-12-10 18:47:03
Yeah, flavor would likely be best. And I'm not even sure about saying that name (as said, someone else said his name earlier), but I for one won't.
Unknown2010-12-10 19:05:48
Oh god, I haven't read or watched anything Harry Potter in years, haha, gotta dust off my brain-works and see if they can still remember who the hell everyone is. Before you said there might be something bad associated with saying his name, I was ready to open my post with just going V-------- V-------- V-------- but without the little dashes and what not. You ruined my silliness! But thank you because it may have been silliness that would get me killed or targeted in some bad way. ninja.gif

I don't see Vendetta's thing as being worth voting for at the moment. It's fairly minor. Instead, I will do a trusty random vote. The great and mighty RNG says that I shoooould... Vote: Casilu ohmy.gif The RNG is testing the limits of my worship.

Fair enough. Though one the other hand...

If you know everything, then you're just as likely to avoid flavour pitfalls based on that, so talk under whatever terms you feel most comfortable. I, for my part, will be following Ssaliss' advice when I'm not being purposefully reckless.

Maybe. Since my role's going to be bugging me until I get this off my chest, why don't I volunteer?

I am Ernie Macmillan, and I win with the Ministry of Magic.

I am... a vanilla townie. For now. What do I mean, "for now", you say? Because my role info insinuates that I might eventually have something to work with later. What, I don't know.

Vanilla is generally a terrible claim to have to make, particularly in a game that looks like it will be power-intensive. This is doubly true if I somehow gain some sort of power later.

I'm left to wonder if other people in town are like this or not, which will make things very difficult. But if not, then I'm better off being loud and direct rather than lurking and hoping people won't notice me, because I'll be twice as fishy if I have to claim after all that.

And as a note, that's not a request for people to say "Oh yes, I'm like you too.". If you are, you can keep it to yourself for the time being. I'm feeling pretty expendable right now and would like to have fun being the guinea pig, so we'll roll with this and see where it goes.

Also, it's an excellent way to say "Hey Death Eaters, don't target me 'cause I'm useless anyway". Hrm.
Diamondais2010-12-10 19:14:41
Yeah.. uncalled for claims are.. iffy. :/
Gleip2010-12-10 19:16:40
Sorry if I am spoiling things, but wasn't there a plot point that the Bad one could read your mind if you said his name?
Ssaliss2010-12-10 19:16:53
If the whole claim is true, it also means there's no DA. Ernir MacMillan was part of the DA in the books; there'd be little reason for him not to be so in the game as well.

I thought it was just that He'd know that you said his name and where you were, but it's been ages since I read the books, so I could very well be wrong.

More likely that scum might focus on getting me lynched, so they can put their nightkill to use on someone with less exposure.

But then that will just lend itself to WIFOM arguments about why I claimed.

In short, don't focus on the why behind the claim so much as what the claim might reveal about the rest of the game's layout in comparison to your own role.
Ssaliss2010-12-10 19:18:46
People with all their shorthand... What's WIFOM mean?
Unknown2010-12-10 19:19:35
Oh, and I'm going to work now, so I won't be posting again until I get back tonight.

As for WIFOM:

It lets him know where you are, pretty much exactly, through pretty much any protective charms-- even the Fidelius Charm. Only the Love Thingy prevents it. It may also help him get to you through protective charms; I'm not clear on that point.
Casilu2010-12-10 19:23:27
HOW DARE YOU PHOEBUS. GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH.

I'm just kidding. I have someone I'm suspicious of, but I want to wait a bit more before I turn the spotlight on them.
Diamondais2010-12-10 19:24:54
We should just refrain from saying HWMNBN's name, just to stay on the safe side unless something comes up that basically gives us the go-ahead to say it without consequence.

It's just ungodly long, so sticking with that abbreviation above. biggrin.gif

The part of the role that "isn't in play" as it's claimed might be something like he can become a part of the DA later if there is one? Maybe it's not a group that exists at the start of the game but can come into play as time goes on? I don't know, I'm grasping for straws with that. There probably just isn't a DA.

Or, it might not be a completely truthful reveal. To just up and come out with your entire role right now, at the very start, with no real precedent for it, is kind of fishy. Personally I think there's another part of the role that wasn't revealed, and the reveal was supposed to make us think that was all there was to it. I might be wrong but either way, it's a pretty suspicious move. Considering voting, but will wait and see what happens.

I'm sticking with capital Him and He as much as I can. Unless it needs extra clarification. Not that I think there'll be much reason to speak about Him separately from the Death Eaters.

Unless the DA is part of the power he might have later.

Knowing that Ernie wins with the Ministry is a little odd to me. He's a student with no real ties to the Ministry. It may be that the Ministry is the town, and includes everyone not in the Order or the Death Eaters. The separate win conditions are a little confusing too. I can't think of anyone in the books off-hand who wasn't on one side or the other.

Yeah; I assumed (yes, that's a bad thing) that Ministry was Town. The Order is likely more like the Masons (I believe they're Town but know who they all are?), and the Death Eaters are the Mafia. I'm not sure if He is simply part of the Death Eaters, if He's even in the game, or if He is a separate fourth part.
