Perhaps it could be construed as cheating, but I very much assure you it has been a part of Lusternia since its inception (I wasn't near being around when Lusternia was first opened, but I can near guarantee this. It is a fact of all online games.). Regardless, unless we lived in a total police state with the admins of Lusternia operating as our overlords monitoring our lives 24/7, it would be impossible to prove such a thing.
It's been done, though mostly in the cases of people admitting that they've done something particularly stupid (and provable) to another player via AIM, MSN, or IRC.

I'm not sure how the crown makes it impossible for players to use tells and stifles communication. What are you -really- talking about commonly that you would die if someone overheard?
No, really, I mean, if people heard the talks Nariah has! Explaining the Nihilistic philosophy, issuing orders, common chatter about a new design or a student. The consequences would be dire indeed!
Also, what Sojiro said, when you're talking about something of a delicate nature, you ought not to sit at your nexus anyhow. It's interceptable aetheric communication, not a clandestine meeting in a dungeon using a cryptic sign language.

You don't even need to do that if you're super lazy.
SQUAD DRAFT (person); sqt sup let's talk here, god damn spies.
msg (person) hey let's talk this way instead / i'm gonna move, follow. God damn spies.
I assume sqt counts anyway, can do the same with any channel really.

Should be grateful we can actually send tells to people far away, not take it for granted. Normally people just talk in a room and others overhear, or there's mechanics where you can talk to just those nearby/at your table but that's still prone to someone snooping but cuts down on spam.
Oh! Lets put a heavy willpower cost on sending tells so that it's good for short stuff and setting up meetings but other than that people do actually have to meet and interact. That would obviously be the END of Lusternia.

I must be the strange one out, all of my political plotting is hatched and executed ingame.

Actually, we should do this. It'd force people to think. Limitations create creativity.
Or in Lusternia's case it would create skype accounts.

I'm still not really sure why this is such a HUGE issue for some people, though. Maybe it's just my paranoia, but any time I'm communicating with someone via any sort of electronic means, I assume I'm being monitored.
Ileein2010-11-18 18:32:32
What, nobody supports Estarra for God-Empress of Mankind? Heretics. You will all burn.
Aerotan2010-11-18 18:40:18
Well, the admin already monitor tells, and many Celestians can tell you that one slip of the tongue in a tell, even one understood to be OOC between the sender and the recipient, could have DIRE consequences In-character if a God takes offense to it.
On the other hand, it can go the other way. I overheard a conversation between two people from the fall-out of Gaudiguch who were looking to get into another org that left me with a rather positive impression of those involved, one which I gladly passed on to someone in a position to need that impression. It may or may not have had an effect this time, but next time, who knows? It could convince someone to change their minds about you. For good or ill.
Honestly, I don't mind it being in-game, but I can see why some might.

Divine spying on your messages is a bad, but arguably necessary property for the game to have. One would hope the Divine have the discretion not to be complete bastards with it.
Players have no obligation to have such discretion and partly for this reason (and partly that the limited amount of privacy we get is important just on its own merits) this is a bad idea, no matter how insignificant, which there really shouldn't be any excuse for because we already fought this battle with stealth users a couple years ago and it should have been sorted out then.

All the best plots are hatched via out of game communication anyhow if the people involved in said plot are smart. Have to keep the metagame train rolling.
Somehow I think this is cheating and should be punishable by shrubbing if caught.

Phred, its been going on continually. Its difficult to prove within Lusternia (and even when you do get evidence sometimes Lusternia logically says 'Hey not our application they are using, not under our jurisdiction'). This is balanced, however, by the plethora of non-Lusternia methods to solve problems.

Someone please tell me I'm dangerously misinformed about this. Failing that, someone give me a good reason why I'm overreacting to say that this is a new level of dumb in the history of Lusternia that makes TBC and hai'Gloh together seem tame. (A good reason must, necessarily, include an actual reason.)
Honestly I can understand your point, but am I the only person who immediately sees the potential for spreading disinformation? Most individuals don't have the skills to follow up and verify if information they receive is correct. Most journalists don't either unfortunately, but that's another rant. If you suspect you are being spied upon, you simply use it to your benefit.
Haven't any of you studied Cold War espionage? Let the games begin!

In the wrong organization historically some admin would give that information to their Order members and you would be up a creek, I'm sad to say.

Yep. Which is why there is the option of bringing that up to support.
Shiri2010-11-18 19:02:38
Heh. Last time I remember disinformation being tried it was really sad. It just ended up getting the team trying it pounded for a few hours they would have gotten a reprieve, and then an event continuing kind of bailed the disinformed team out of it anyway.

I agree its situational, and often not worth the time. However so is spying. Misinformation's success depends on who is orchestrating it and the details of the situation.
Shiri2010-11-18 19:11:21
Spying is totally not the reason this is a problem.
EDIT: I probably should have reiterated that the post before this, huh.

Can we get an artifact that shows you all emotes done but only if they have certain keywords that involve mudsecks? That could be entertaining for hours on end.

Just think about the implications about the one who bought said artifact!

I would buy two and copy the logs to a site. It would be hilarious. In fact, I thought one of the IRE games had a site where people posted those logs while they were spying on the people doing it?
Arath2010-11-18 19:30:36
Why two?
