Welcome. If you really can't make up your mind, you can guildhop easily as a novice - everyone (in every org!) tends to be willing to recruit, so they're happy to talk about their org. You can also learn a bit about the various guilds by way of the Collegium.
And of course, they're all terribly helpful on the forums (as you've seen). It's a bit disturbing!

Yeah, the Collegium quests (especially History) are excellent for learning about the org, and the flavor really does tell you pretty much everything you need to know about the atmosphere. That goes for pretty much any org.

Well, I'll tackle the RP-ness of the Institute ingame, but for now - how do they fare in combat itself?
I'm Champion of the Institute, which is basically the combat head of the guild. Institute combat is pretty fun; we've got a lot of randomness, but in the end, most of it can be controlled and predicted.
If I had to compare us to Achaean Houses, I would say...
...if you take Healing: Priest healing + Occultist entities + low Magi damage
...if you take Tarot: Occultist entities + Occultist tarot + low Magi damage
...if you take Astrology: Occultist entities + weakened EvilEye + high Magi damage
Talk to me in game, if you have any questions, I made the transition from Achaea and I'm loving it so far!

I would take this as a 'don't come2Celest' post
On a more related welcome note, (if it hasn't been said already), it might be helpful if you read the histories and see what your char idea fits in well with.
on the other hand, you could hop around in the first few moments of the life of your char to you find what suits you...

Interestingly, if I can get hooked enough on the lore of Lusternia, I might find myself doing four pieces of work a month(for Achaea and Lusternia. )
Also, might as well add... the lore in Lusternia is amazing. Less about reliance on fantasy tropes to prop up a story and more about experimenting with those tropes and seeing how far they can be stretched.

Agreed. My favorite part about Lusternia, hands down, is the lore. Since it's all written by the same, completely awesome, person, it all ties in together perfectly. Everything that happens makes sense eventually.

It shall be balefire for you, Ileein.
WIPE HIM FROM THE PATTERN! NOT EVEN THE CREATRIX CAN STEP OUTSIDE OF TIME!
.. sorry, I couldn't resist.

That's what I always think when I see the word 'balefire.'

I'm glad I'm not the only one, then...

It is one of the aesthetic reasons I like Researcher combat.

Having fun with the system.

Out of curiousity, what client do you use?
Unknown2010-12-15 15:23:12
ZMud. Might move to Mudlet as soon as they make user profile paths customizable.
Jules2010-12-15 19:38:44
You should definitely move to Mudlet /sagenod
Unknown2010-12-15 20:12:44
I enjoy Mudlet and have done far more coding in it than I could ever do in MUSHclient.

I just moved to Mudlet from cMUD. I have to learn to code from scratch (did everything in zScript for years). It's not as bad as I thought it would be, so far!

Learning a new language isn't anything compared to learning the actual ability to code for the first time.

Agreed.
I'm learning java right now in school, working on Mudlet coding at home.

Just a bit of a question regarding influence - is Adept level(where I get at least one of every ego battle type) an acceptable level for doing most influence quests?
