Not sure this one fits into a F.A.Q. file, but understanding NSTAT and READLOG... especially as it relates to guild credit sales. Almost made it 18 mos or so just paying into the first weave of a credit sale, and nothing more, because I didn't understand "weaves" or these other vehicles for communication. Instead, I continued to plug away at the open credit market. Much less the "strategy" to save up 150k or so to endure either a guild or org credit sale. So much wasted gold in those early years...

How newbie are we talking here. suspicious.gif IRE noob, or Lusternia noob?

Most of the things I'd add have already been said: the importance of NEWBIE and CGT channels, how fantastic mentors can be, and what Guild Undersecretaries are for. That alone helps immensely. I think 99% of what I learned about Lusternia I learned from asking questions and being prodded in the right direction. And this is coming from someone who joined Lusternia and was surprised when the game popped up without graphics. blush.gif So...bit of a learning curve.

Also the importance of immersion. It's always awkward when someone appears at the nexus saying "Lol are you gaiz NPCs?" Directing them to HELP OOC doesn't always help. Nor do nice tells. Generally they do, but... Well I'd hope someone going into a MUD knew that, it'd make their life a lot easier.

All other points made thus far are useful. I'd like to add how to work aetherways. I was so confused by that at first. laugh.gif

HELP BASECOMMANDS

I would have loved to know that trying emotes(( having never played a text based game before)) will lead to people thinking you are insane, thereby influencing your roleplay forever! Also, learning how to move, and remembering what channels are for what, eh, thing, would have helped at the start. That is all i remember right now, actually.

HELP GUILDNOVICES (think that is the right command!)

I only found out about this recently, and at least for the Nihilists it has a way better writeup than the official help file. I assume GMs have update rights on this?

Yes we do.

Also, on another note, does this mean that we should consider adding to the Wiki an... advanced page that holds all of the little things that people don't know about (favours, enchantments, etc)?

Yes, but it's primarily a GA thing to maintain (since it's about novices). The one thing special about it compared to GHELPs is that this one is visible to those outside the guild. That's why Spiritsingers use it as something I can show people asking about joining so they can decide if the guild is really the one they want, and use GHELPs for everything you need to know after you joined.

There is indeed an Equipment section that we've never filled in for lack of a good idea on what to do with it. I think it's a great idea to make it be the "more detail" part from the Newbie Guide -- e.g., the newbie guide says "You will eventually want this stuff" and that's a link to the Equipment page which breaks out what you will probably need, ranked by priority, with notes like how to recharge enchantments. That way, the Newbie Guide has what you need to know now but isn't all in one intimidating volume of text.

Oh dear god yes. wub.gif

Actually, I think skimming the quick questions thread for things that get asked about frequently might be a good start. I often know an answer has been given in that thread to a question, but with forum search being set up as it is, it will not show you which exact post it was in, thus resulting in going through every page with browser search, or having google search its cache.
Unknown2010-12-25 20:24:46
You actually can search by post on the forums. Another alternative is to google 'site:forums.lusternia.com '.

Yeah. We use ours (and the Aeromancers use theirs) as a cross between propaganda and an introduction to the guild's atmosphere, so as to guide those wondering whether the guild is for them. I was sad to see the Sentinels didn't create one, and even sadder to see that none of the Gaudi guilds have made one. sad.gif They're fun! Really!

When you want to talk OOC, use TELLS, and precede all OOC talk with '//'. This is a must.

NSTAT is your friend. Get to know it well, meet it's parents, offer to take it out to dinner.

Please, please, PLEASE describe yourself as something OTHER than beauty/muscle incarnate!

And finally, ask questions. If you don't know how to do something, or how something is to be done, or how to say something using 'RP terminology', then ask how to do it! Your mentor/Guide/everyone is willing to help!

I've always learned the double brackets (from you Xenthos smile.gif ) but lately I've had a lot of people using the //.

I do, but it's out of laziness. I can't be bothered using shift+9.
Jules2010-12-26 02:33:01
I use it because //'s are generally used as comments in code, which signifies text not pertaining to the current line of code, thus it fits well here!

Alas, // does not compile...

* Let's be funky and use a * instead. For no apparent reason.

That was the first thing I thought of when I saw Jules' comment.
