Thank you!

Even though I only came in for the last couple of months of it, 2010 has been a very fun "year" for me in Lusternia. I got to be here for the 2 week event at the end, and see the introduction of the new aetherspace conflict system - which is awesome, and I'm glad to see constructs/colossi being used again. Also I like anything that adds a reason to use aetherships, which I think is one of the neatest aspects of Lusternia.
Also love seeing new areas added (please update the XML maps provided though, my mudlet mapper is not happy in some of these areas!), and skillflex is a great addition.
My only complaints for the year is that the racial rebalance didn't really do much (and even made some races like Tae'dae even worse than before), and the end game still needs some work. The essence shop is cool, but could use some more flavor abilities with a low to zero weight, and I think demi's aren't being given enough credit in their ability to participate in the real end game stuff (domoths, ascendant powers). These people are a pretty large percentage of the player base.

I only returned to Lusternia in the last third or quarter of the year, but this is the third or fourth time I've returned, and that's a testament to how powerful Lusternia's draw will always be.
For me, the highlight of Lusternia is a the extremely well-written lore. For me, what I liked most about the Gnafia event was the Book of Bollikin. The Histories are always the reason why I played, stay, and return.
On top of that, I did the Grandmother Scorpion quest, which was something that I've always wanted to do, and I'm extremely delighted by the amount of lore the Voice of Grandmother Scorpion and the diaries of the Old Ones give with regards to both Glomdoring and Gaudiguch, my two homes in Lusternia. (And then I had to mess it up when I missed logging the important prophecy by just one line. )
Despite all it's drama and ups and downs, I still have to say, I Lusternia.

I think it's quite remarkable that, after yet another year, the unified creative vision of Lusternia has remained strong. It's easy to say that, unlike other IRE games, Lusternia has had the luxury of a single captain at the helm since inception, and attribute the game's cohesion to that, but without Estarra's skill and perseverance it simply wouldn't have happened. The whimsy isn't to everyone's taste, but that's what Lusternia is, and has been ever since the stinking finks were battling the gnoble gnomes in Newton in open beta. Well done.

Thank you to all of our wonderful admins for all of the work they do behind the scenes. I've been playing since open beta and still love the game (even though it has changed quite a bit!) as much as I did when I was sucked over from Achaea.
Also, a special thank you to Elostian. Without all of the wonderful RP opportunities that he has provided for my character, I don't know that I would have stuck around this long or been this interested in the game. A special thanks to Nihmriel and the Shevats, who have done a great job keeping me entertained and involved when feeling stressed out about other aspects of the game.
I hope this year is as awesome as last year.

I did this the other day.

I'm always really impressed by the lore. Seriously, Lusternia sometimes feels like a great fantasy novel that never ends! (On that note, more Elder Wars releases! And hopefully there's something similar that comes after those end!)

Another big release was the skillflex system, which allows you to make your skills dormant rather than forgetting them completely. Thus, if you decide to change guilds or take new trade skills, you can keep your old skills in reserve. As part of this, we got rid of the magic skillset which was folded into lowmagic and highmagic. This was a bigger deal under-the-hood than people imagined (we completely reworked how the code handles skills), but it gave us a more stable and flexible skill system than we had before.
I love this, while I haven't used it yet (release the cord as a normal artifact please?) it is a great system. folding magic into the high/low set was a great idea and I would love if you would do it with combat and Resilience.

Our final release was hopefully unexpected: the conflict system for aetherspace! This has actually been on the drawing table for a very long time (well over a year). I had always wanted a village-like conflict system in aetherspace and, after the failure of the nexus world conflict, I also wanted to bring back bombarding, constructs and colossus in some form. As we were planning the Gnafia year-end event, it seemed like a logical progression to release the aetherspace conflict. Unfortunately, it wasn’t coded so we -- well, okay, Sior -- coded the system in record time, and, yes, last minute testing and debugging was occurring right up until just before release! Phew! Fortunately, the release went smoothly and I think the aetherspace conflict will offer an exciting dimension.
While I hated the event itself (and the fact I find the concept of Gnafia a bit too whimsy even for Lusternia they are here...until we kill them), the ending I enjoyed seeing. However I never saw the nexus world conflict as a failure myself, yes i would say it wasn't used as fully as it could or should have been. but this new system maybe will be just as good? (plug for releasing bubblixes as normal artifacts here, please)

The Havens has seen a bit of activity. Lisaera briefly awoke (but then promptly went back to sleep). Lyreth and Shikari both returned with a vengeance. And we saw a few new faces in the forms of Kalikai and Hoaracle. Our other active divine include Eventru, Fain, Terentia, Elostian, Maylea, Nocht, Morgfyre, Raezon and Viravain. This is a great crew of volunteers and I enjoyed working with them immensely. I’d like to give a special shout out to Eventru who not only now codes but remains a true adept at building and running events, and I’d also like to recognize Lyreth who has been doing a lot of building and work behind the scenes. Everyone helps and I do think of this as part of my extended family. It cannot be said enough that the volunteers are our unsung heroes. Volunteers work hard and get very little in return, except for the satisfaction of knowing their creative endeavors are enjoyed by others. I cannot understate how much they are truly appreciated.
Having active gods is always nice (speaking of which, Glomdoring gods are seemly gone inactive right now, or at least they don't show themselves... Come back Viravain, Nocht and Shikari
This year has been fun. It has had its up and downs. With all these new releases, its nice to see that the admins work hard for the game, even if the playerbase hates the result.
And a more of a simple question of the new epic quests: If we spend all this time (event) stopping the Gnafia....exactly how does it make sense to help them with these new epic quests? and since the file says you need at least 8 honours....does this mean you are planing more aetherbubbles for us?

This, I can answer! Life is full of choices. People help criminals all the time, for varying reasons.
And there are 12 aetherspace honours right now (Frosticia, Pastries, Candies, Mold, Undead, Dramube, Facility, Figurines, Bottledowns, Xion, Finks and Slivven).
And you all should do more Ask Estarra video questions. I always find them fascinating!

(Can only have 11 of those at a time) PS. mini- grump grump grump at losing 11 of 'em.
On topic though thanks so much (or perhaps darn you all!) to all the divine/admin/helpers for making Lusternia still amazing after so long! Just when I'm ready to quit I find reasons to stick around to get that fancy new bauble or whatnot.

Yes, for the epic you said only one honours from a bubble would work, so there is only.....what, I believe you said 8?

I made a character!
Unknown2011-01-06 23:31:53
Wow, so many things I forgot, or happened when Phoebus was just a wee little one... I made my character on January 31, 2010. I've gone from total and completely lost mugwump nublet to flipping Archmage. I'm a Titan. Hallifax is awesomesauce. Feels good man.
When I look back on this year, I'm pretty surprised that I've stuck around. Ok, that sounded bad, but give me a second to explain, haha. The thing is, I don't stick with anything. I tend to start something, get bored in a week, and quit. I'm fundamentally unreliable. But that didn't happen here. So many things have happened in my year in Lusternia that have kept me coming back. Discovering a healthy love for the design system, developing the...interesting life of my character, and of course, all the wonderful friends I have made! And for the most part I've kept up with all the responsibilities I've taken on (slacking on those DVA reports though, but I mean, they get pretty boring after a while, always the same, snooooze...someone needs to guilt me into getting back on track with it.)
tl;dr: Lusternia
