I've ran this by a few people and am curious to see what others think.
I believe that seal bearers should be allowed to compete in the Ascension trial each year. Why? Because it honestly makes very little sense that a seal be rendered near-useless in the following trials year after year. What, does it suddenly become a dud? If you win a seal, that should be it. You can support others the next year or even place for credits, but should be barred from winning another seal but again- may compete for a chance at True Ascendant. Currently we have players that go for seals just to trade them in for 2000 credits or keep as trophies. They shouldn't be an artifact one may trade, for starters. It makes no business sense and it goes completely against the spirit of the event. Sealbearers should WANT to ascend. That is the point, I thought. Not to win seals just to trade them in. The Ascension could be reworked some to prevent burnout; trying to obtain 3600 points is a lot when you have many people vying for Ascendant but I'm sure each org would select one individual each year to support. So not a huge problem... Personally, I wouldn't mind if the seals/trials went away entirely. It's just dull at this point. I don't speak for everyone, of course. Huge insanity-filled bloodfest with supermobs isn't my idea of fun but I digress!
Thoughts...if any?

I like the idea, but it would mean that there would be fewer and fewer people going for seals each year, and it also means that the final ascension event would be hyoog.
Ayisdra2011-02-07 22:33:42
so just because I don't want a seal means I can't try and place for credits? That makes no sense. past year seals still work in killing eyeballs and the such, i think.
Diamondais2011-02-07 22:35:19
No, I don't think that's what Malicia is saying, I think she's saying you shouldn't be able to win other Seals, as in the item.
Yeah? No?
Yeah? No?
Rika2011-02-07 22:35:32
No one is ever guaranteed to win a challenge. If I had the opportunity to get TA, I would go for it. If anything, I think the complaint about the challenges is that so many of them is about who has the best support. Only a small minority of them is really about who is best at something.

Read it again- I said you'd be able to participate and support or place for credits but barred from winning a Seal if you won one in the previous year(s). I was pretty clear about that. Sealbearers need their fun too and would get another chance at becoming a True Ascendant.
Edit: At the very least, make it so you can't trade them in for 2000 credits. You'll see a difference in the level of pursuit for them. Rika, didn't you win Nature last year? I don't know about you but I'm seeing the same people winning Seals each year. If kept the same, just change/remove the tradein value.

The only thing I'd ever win would be the seal thing - and, the only one of those I'd ever have an actual chance to win would be the Beauty one. Every single thing else, especially the final event, is too combat oriented for me to ever have more than a technical chance. Technically, sure, I have a chance. In reality, no way.
But, anyway, my point isn't to knock the contests, it's to say, why should (if I managed to win a Beauty contest some year) I only ever get to win once and never be able to try to win again?

It means, you'd get to try and become Ascendant each year... That is the point of seeking a Seal. To save the basin from Kethuru! *tentacles*
Ssaliss2011-02-07 22:43:18
So every year we'd have another six potential TAs? That'd get really crowded really fast.

I get that, and sure, I'd go up and do my best... but what it would really mean is each year I'd get to go up and get bam squished by everyone who entered the room I was in. Winning the seal contest would be more fun - at least then I've accomplished something (assuming I won).

There can only be one... (each year)

Each year, yes. But right now we have seven potential TAs per year. Next year we'd have 13 potential TAs. The year after that 29.

Nine potentially each year but let's assume it'd be 6 at the most because I doubt any city/forest would split their support between 2-3+ sealbearers in their org.
Xenthos2011-02-07 22:52:31
In regards to me personally: Every time I go for a Seal, I do so in large part for an attempt at TA. This year's no different.
If y'all want to help me get it and get me out of the way for future events, please do!
Otherwise I plan to keep competing until that comes through.

Talan was very close to beating me. Nothing is certain. The same people are not winning the seals every year.
Chaos: Shorlen, Ashteru, Sarrasri, Ruiku, Esano
War: Shamarah, Visaeris, Desitrus, Ceren, Lothringen
Justice: Forren, Thoros, Malarious, Zallafar, Veyrzhul
Nature: Kaervas, Kaervas, Xiel, Rika, Rika
Knowledge: Hallen, Forren, Ishant, Nott, Solanis
Harmony: Exarius, Galaphyrae, Veyrzhul, Krellan, Talan
Life: Soll, Xenthos, Xenthos, Talan, Xenthos
Death: Daevos, Sojiro, Vathael, Sidd, Krellan
Beauty: Amarysse, Zia, Silferras, Kharaen, Irillia
Of 45 contests, we've had one person win the same seal thrice (Xenthos), two people win the same seal twice (Kaervas and Rika) and four people win two different seals (Forren, Veyrzhul, Talan and Krellan). How is that the same people winning every year?

Well. I gave the seal to Talan last year (ie I didn't really compete / shared knowledge / etc) so as to help other Gloms get seals. That's pretty much why I feel like this is in large part targeted at me, as I am pretty sure I could have won last year too if I had wanted to.
Really, while the 2000 credits is really nice, I would like to get TA. 2000 credits is a nice compensation for when I lose (which I seem to do on a regular basis, but hey).

@Rika- I don't think it matters whether it's the same seal or a different seal. If you have a seal from any category, you shouldn't be allowed to win another next year and so on. Sure, chaos, beauty and knowledge are random, but again- the same people are winning seals, it doesn't have to be the same type. It's easy to call it, believe it or not.
Edit: @Xenthos- that would be up to Glomdoring, wouldn't it?

@Xenthos- you said that last year you intentionally didn't go for True Ascendant- which is your prerogative.
Yeah. That's why I only placed third last year. I'm positive I could've at the very least gotten second if I had been trying.
Malicia2011-02-07 23:05:13
You missed my edit. But eh, just to bring you down a notch, this isn't directed at you... I rather yelled at Veyrzhul for trading in his first seal last year . I don't think they should serve that purpose.

Alright, I can agree that first seals should not be tradeable. Personally, I would never trade in my medallion. If I won a medallion of a different type, I wouldn't trade that in, either. But holding two medallions of nature is kind of silly.
