I tend to put all unfamiliar contacts in facebook under a separate group, whose access to my account is greatly limited.

I have a group called "Lusternians", which is more for me to remember that I do actually know you than anything. I go on rages and delete dozens of contacts at a time, sometimes. >.>

Also, saw the group ages ago... but no one was active. sad.gif Must go see again.

Lusternia knows what I look like and sound like and such. I'm going to leave it at that.

I wub.gif you all but when all is said and done I like knowing that I can walk away quietly from my intarweb corners sometimes.

For those who have Facebook accounts and are interested, the new Lusternia Facebook Group has been pretty active. Come join!

Now I know why the group expanded exponentially in my 24-hour absence! aha!

I don't know half of the members..but I bet not even a quarter knows me. haha. ninja.gif

I hate to tell you, but once you've been there, they have the information forever, even after you delete the account. They may not make it visible to plebians like you and me, but they've got it.

I'm nowhere on any of those sites. Never wanted to send my information to some slimey little jackass unless I absolutely have to, tyvm.
Daraius2011-02-19 15:29:39
Eh, well, it's not so much a matter of not wanting my information 'out there.' I just think social networking is silly. smile.gif

(I might also be turned off by the ubiquity of Facebook.)

You're going to regret that outlook when we need to organize to rise up and overthrow The Man.

I'm sure on that day, Lusternia's administration will be too busy to moderate their forums and remove political posts...

The revolution begins here!

(Unless Estarra is an agent of The Man)

Daraius, I think Facebook's going to be more important in the future, as both they, Twitter, and a few other players are sort of becoming a layer on the Internet. It will probably be similar to how certain things replaced others. Forums replaced Mailing Lists and newsgroups. So I think avoiding something like Facebook will be akin to avoiding having a phone number or an e-mail address. I don't think Facebook is going to end up like MySpace.

Heck, I'll bet in the future you'll pretty much need a LinkedIn account to get most "white collar" jobs.
Kiradawea2011-02-19 16:15:14
I had to get facebook to keep up with school.
Daraius2011-02-19 16:29:01
I'm prepared to accept the inevitable when the time comes. Right now, though, I have a reputation to maintain. I try not to break character too much IRL. biggrin.gif

There's a whole lot of good reasons to avoid getting entrenched in facebook, although you're absolutely right that it is getting more and more important.

Isn't Facebook the epitome of Hallifaxian social tracking? Aside from farming and 'yo'ing your ville, and the occasional Hallifaxian-pretending-to-be-Gnafia, it seems like a social compilation (that could be used to track the movements, locations and behavior of their citizens) is only a logical move...

True. People should use it carefully. I just am noting that it's becoming more entrenched in life and in many cases it is actually replacing or at least supplementing things like web pages. There's a reason most advertisements now include the F(acebook) and T(witter) icons. Unless something goes wrong with the business model and support a la MySpace, I can see both services being as important as the web and e-mail became in the late 90s.

That's pretty much the same on the Internet. Anonymity is actually hard to accomplish, especially with all the services people sign up for, as well as new features such as Geolocation.
Lendren2011-02-19 18:24:22
Let's try to remember when we talk about anonymity on the Internet, how much anonymity did your grandmother ever hope to have? Even if Facebook, Google, and the CIA teamed up to steal our information, we'd still have more ways to do things anonymously now than any previous generation ever did. I'm not saying it's not an issue, just saying, don't forget what our baseline is.
