I've always wondered why Blizzard continues to charge for the base game and expansion sets, which taken together will run new players something like $50, not including Cataclysm. It seems as though 95% of their profits come from monthly fees, and perhaps they'd get more new players if there weren't such a heavy buy-in cost.

It's industry standard for older MMORPGs to charge nothing (or next to nothing) for the base game and all of its expansions. I guess Blizzard doesn't feel that's in their best interests, which means that either box sales account for a larger proportion of their profits than I'd thought, or they just plain don't wanna and don't hafta.

WoW is offering a new 2-seated flying mount through it's recruit-a-friend thing, but everybody I know either already plays, or really does not want to get sucked into it. ):

Do what everyone else does, buy a second account and pay for two months. Get a trial key from someone and upgrade it to avoid having to buy a boxed copy of vanilla.

I want the mount, but there is no way in hell I'm paying that much for it. Already give Blizzard enough money with the monthly fees.

And yet sooo many have bitched about the new Celestial steed, which is only 25$! Imo Celestial Steed > Touring Rocket.

Also, I my Starpony. I have one on both of my accounts. Nice for leveling, won't have to buy a mount every 20 levels.

Assuming I somehow got a key for a new account for free (somebody mentioned that but I have no idea how you would), you need to buy 2 months to get the mount.

Yes. 2 months is 30. But you save 15 dollars from your main accounts subscription, due to the free month.

Get a trial key from someone. If you've already got the software, getting a new key is easy.
