I've always wondered why Blizzard continues to charge for the base game and expansion sets, which taken together will run new players something like $50, not including Cataclysm. It seems as though 95% of their profits come from monthly fees, and perhaps they'd get more new players if there weren't such a heavy buy-in cost.
It's industry standard for older MMORPGs to charge nothing (or next to nothing) for the base game and all of its expansions. I guess Blizzard doesn't feel that's in their best interests, which means that either box sales account for a larger proportion of their profits than I'd thought, or they just plain don't wanna and don't hafta.

From the size of the player base they do have I suppose they figure that people are willing to pay for it.
Though I agree, it's going to be getting rather out of hand when Cataclysm comes out if they don't drop the prices on the other expansions. And judging from Amazon the current price for Vanilla+BC+WotLK would be about $90. Couldn't find the prices on the WoW site for keys since I already have them. <,<

WoW is offering a new 2-seated flying mount through it's recruit-a-friend thing, but everybody I know either already plays, or really does not want to get sucked into it. ):
Anybody here want to start playing?

Do what everyone else does, buy a second account and pay for two months. Get a trial key from someone and upgrade it to avoid having to buy a boxed copy of vanilla.

I want the mount, but there is no way in hell I'm paying that much for it. Already give Blizzard enough money with the monthly fees.

You actually would only be paying 15 dollars. You get a free month on your main account, remember?

You laugh, but look at the going rate for some of the card game mounts. At one point I checked the Spectral Tiger and they were selling for around $1000.

And yet sooo many have bitched about the new Celestial steed, which is only 25$! Imo Celestial Steed > Touring Rocket.

Blizzard could allow people to just straight up donate money to them and people would bitch about it for some reason. "OMG, Blizzard's accountant will like them more, nerf!"

Some people are sick. That said, how do I get in on this business so I can take advantage of these sick people.

Buy lots of WoW TCG. You'd have to look at the website to see which sets had in-game reward cards. (There's market for the in-game reward cards, not just the Spectral Mount)

I was too afraid to search for an instruction manual on my horse, I fear. Had I known it was simply behind its ear, my life might have been a lot easier, and my thighs would be less sore.
Also, I my Starpony. I have one on both of my accounts. Nice for leveling, won't have to buy a mount every 20 levels.
And Kira, it's more important that you're safe than people like you or not. *hugs*

I have one, but I still admit that people like us make stormwind look like a gay bar.

Silvermoon doesn't look any gayer than it already did, thankfully.
I have one on my Undead Priest, and someone stopped and went "... wow, really?" then proceeded to tell me it looked weird. I told him, "At least I'm not a Tauren."

Undead Priests can just Shadowform it and make it look like a shadow-pegasus.
I dunno if I want to stick with my Mage, or go with my Druid for PVPing.

Assuming I somehow got a key for a new account for free (somebody mentioned that but I have no idea how you would short of stealing), you need to buy 2 months to get the mount.
EDIT: Also I find the Pegasus really tacky, but I guess that's just me. <,<

Yes. 2 months is 30. But you save 15 dollars from your main accounts subscription, due to the free month.

Hrm, forgot that. Though still, have to add in the cost of getting the actual game key which I have no idea how much that is. And $15 is already more then I'm willing to spend on a mount. <,<

Get a trial key from someone. If you've already got the software, getting a new key is easy.

Easy, or free? 'Cus I don't know any way of getting one besides paying the $20ish, which I guess is easy.
@Gregori: Yeah, totally going to start paying for two accounts when I can't even afford to play 1 year round.
