Isn't that pretty much what he said? tongue.gif Furrikin is a bad race for PVE. They're ok at influencing, but by no means great, and that's really it. Lucidian is tankier caster. Merian is only a bit weaker, but much more intelligent. Mugwumps have a lot of speed going on. Aslaran have more con and int, and more balance and strength to boot. Kin could probably stand to be more than bard tanks... but eh. What I would ideally see, is a solution to the specc-race only problem.

Pretty much this. While I may not have much direct experience, looking at the races, furrikin seems like an average.
Aerotan2010-08-25 21:37:20
If/when they get the Acklespec that'll change, I think.

I'd be on board for helping brainstorm the 20/40/60/80/100 skills if there's not already a thread for it (I've been lurking this thread for a couple days now, so I'll likely need to edit this part out).
Xiel2010-08-25 21:49:49
Give me an hour. Finally finished the outline (late) last night and need to write the explanation still. And hooray for cross-over skills for less code work. cheer.gif
Kiradawea2010-08-25 22:43:08
Aww. But I want to help with that.

How about a teleport to racial home skill thing? Perhaps too much but... could make for stronger racial ties maybe, if all races knew that there were mob orgs out there with their name on it.

Ideally though, by making these skills, we'll change the focus as it currently is from "Okay, race A has very, very, very slightly better stats than B, so it is race A" into "Okay, so race A may be slightly little better than B, but B has this totally fun fun FUN skill that only race B gets. What to choose..."

I like how 'racial balance' means 'let's add more skills to further differentiate between races'.

I like how 'racial balance' means, hop up and down, scream for more goodies for your race of choice, try and nerf races linked with the "other side", and generally fly off on tertiary points rather than just fix the few things that probably need it and move on.

It's like watching a law get passed.

"I propose a law that says you can't steal a persons soup!"

"I second it, and wish to amend the proposal to ensure I get after dinner mints with my soup!"

"I third it, so long as I also get after dinner mints, and also, rather than soup, I want steak."

"I fourth it. So long as I get to eat my soup riding on an elephant with a minibar on top."

And so on so on so forth.

I demand that minibars on elephant-back be a dwarf-only perk. Also, because of our level three alcoholism, I demand that we get better mooching (charity) and groping (seduction) skills while drunk. Also, the eq penalty and 12 int need to die for the sake of the bard spec, and it wouldn't hurt if the base warrior dwarf was better balanced against orclach, the closest race conceptually. Don't forget to nerf adamantine lucidians too!

...did I do it right?
Ileein2010-08-26 00:35:41
I do like the idea of flavor skills, though. I live for flavor. sad.gif
Unknown2010-08-26 00:38:10
Illithoid probably do need toning down a bit. I blame Illdrain.
Xiel2010-08-26 00:53:42
Well, that took longer than I thought. And what's wrong with creating further differentiation between the races? I thought the point of races was so that people were different. You folk can go ahead and argue about statistics and resistances and weaknesses all you want, but I like my flavour. wub.gif

Anyways, pipe up if you want. I kinda...lost ideas as the races dragged on and on, though taking a look at it now, even if a majority of the skills are not only shared and in existence, shoving them into each race at each level kinda looks daunting to me. Probably it's because I'm no coder, but still. Tada:

You know, the more I think about it, I feel like I just diverged from flavour to outright utility skills. -flop- Looking at it all too, considering the amount of code that I guess it would take, it's no wonder they haven't put something like this in already. 20 races with 5 skills each at different levels? Alas, this just seems like an idea doomed to fail, but I enjoyed thinking about it anyway. Feel free to pick at what you like/don't like, but I got it out of my system at least. wub.gif
Unknown2010-08-26 01:04:40
Eh, fun ideas. If nothing else, that Loboshigaru Pack business should be implemented. Not crucial to balance, of course, but gives a nice male-mirror to Kephera. 'Male Alpha Loboshigaru'.

You sensitivity to aroma is such that you can detect the subtle nuances of each and
every creature, letting you know if one resides close to your location. Think of it
as Bond Track but limited to just the information of knowing if a critter is close
by or not.
***
Trample
Syntax: TRAMPLE
Drive yourself into a frenzy of flailing hooves and trample the limbs of anyone
unfortunate enough to be prone on the ground. Be wary that doing so will come at a
considerable cost to your balance and mental equilibrium.
***
Tree Dweller
Syntax: (Passive)
Your affinity to the trees will grant immunity to the blustering winds which would
otherwise knock the treeclimber down from these lofty boughs.
***
Volcanology
Syntax: (Passive)
Your knowledge of the unpredictability of volcanic eruptions affords you immunity
to the fiery conflagrations of the Fire Plane.
***
Waterbreathe
Syntax: (Passive)
Nothing defines your race better than your capability to dwell and thrive within
a watery environment without drowning like a landlubber.

Feel free to pick at what you like/don't like, but I got it out of my system at least. wub.gif

I actually like this idea, though of course certain skills fit better for certain classes than others. Example: Harvester on an Elfen would only be useful for Herbalist and not everyone is one and also an Elfen. I myself am an Elfen Aquamancer and such that ability would be useless to me, but I like none the less.

Yeah, the trade skill ones would be annoying.

Illithoid probably do need toning down a bit. I blame Illdrain.

I actually agree with this statement... having played an illithoid ninjakari/nekotai. Switching over to lobo felt like a significant step down. It should be aslaran for outright speed, loboshigaru for outright tankiness, and illithoid as a nice balance between (as far as monk races are concerned).

Whereas lobo has 16 con (and level 3 regen), and aslaran 12 con, perhaps illithoid (with level 2 health/mana regen below ground) could be toned down by shaving at least one or two points of constitution. That, and 50 ego per level at 100 playable levels means their end game ego bonus is somewhere in the realms of +5000 at max illdrain (stacked with normal charisma based ego).

That is ungodly considering the mechanics of bloodboil and TK forcefield. I blame both constitution and illdrain.

Tada:

Xiel, this is outright awesome. Lots of thought was invested into this breakdown. Could you post somewhere on your website (maybe not link-able from the front page) so that it can have a life outside of the forums? Even if it was never to be implemented, I'd love to bask in the thoughtfulness of this proposal.

Why thank you. Give me a minute and I'll attach a link to the idea in the General Questions subtopic of my wiki. Also, I honestly kinda ran out of ideas for the flavour skills at the level 100 mark (thus a lot of them having to do with trades) that'll not really impact combat, but actually be 'worth it' for having bashed to 100 and being whatever race you choose.

I'm certainly not averted to tweaking the idea more if people wanna toss stuff up.

As completely awesome as the list is, I bet you can easily whittle the number of abilities down. Remember all races loose the need for sleep/eat at level 80. That's a serious perk! Also demi options might mean a level 100 racial perk might not be entirely necessary; it would be dwarfed by everything else. I'd like to see a second and revised proposal with racial abilities at level 20, 40, and 60.

You could easily remove 1-2 from each race. 25-50-75 (and then maybe 100) work just as nicely for level restrictions.

I'm personally against having Scent be an option unless it does something different from the pignoses. It's unfair to everyone that bought the pignose when scent becomes readily accessible without skill investments.

I'm also pro Pride Formation: Start your own pride (aslaran racial skill, like hive and pack mentality)!

Xiel, I still appreciate the effort. I think flavour should favour utility for the most part, though.
